A visit to a dentist can be a scary event for your child, OR, it can be pleasurable and positive for both of you! Our Troy, Ohio dentist loves treating children because we believe that one of the most important things we can give our kids is the gift of good oral health.
Your Role in Your Child’s Dental Health
As a parent, you obviously play a big part in helping your child achieve dental health. You supervise their oral hygiene to make sure they’re brushing properly. You watch what they eat because you know how important a healthy diet is, not just for general health, but for dental health as well.
You’ve chosen the Troy, OH dentist because you feel he will support your child’s emotional and oral health needs. But we need your help to ensure that your child is prepared for their dental visit so they have the best experience possible.
How You Can Help
First, be understanding of the fact that your child may be frightened by the new experience. They will be in a room they do not recognize that is full of tools and objects that are not familiar to them. Our team is used to dealing with children, but until they get to know us, they may feel insecure about a room full of strangers.
So don’t be concerned if your child acts fussy. It doesn’t mean you’ve done something wrong or that your child is misbehaving. It means this is a new experience and your child isn’t sure how to cope with it. They take their cues from you, and if you act nervous and concerned, they will too.
Keep a positive attitude. If you are afraid of the dentist, try not to say things that will increase the fear of your child. Answer simple questions for your child, and if you don’t know, it’s okay to say that. If your child is old enough, encourage him or her to ask the dentist questions about what they will experience. We love starting kids off with a positive view of dentistry and will be happy to explain to your child how the dental equipment works.
